Recommended Routes: Sightsee Seoul Like an Insider
Once you're settled—flights, stay, and money sorted—it's time to hit the streets. These recommended routes help you see the best of Seoul in a logical order, with LGBTQ+-friendly areas and must-see spots in one flow.
How to Use These Routes
- Half-day routes (3–5 hours): Pick one for a morning or afternoon. Combine two for a full day.
- Full-day routes (6–8 hours): One district or theme, with breaks. Ideal for first-time visitors who want depth over breadth.
- Transit: All routes assume you have a T-Money or WOWPASS card. Subway and bus times are approximate.
Insider Tip: Start early (9–10 AM) for palaces and markets; save Itaewon and Jongno bars for late afternoon and evening. Check our district pages for current venue hours and events.
Route 1: Itaewon & Homo Hill (Half-Day)
Best for: First-time visitors who want to see the heart of Seoul's gay scene in one go.
1. Itaewon Station (Line 6) → Walk up the main strip. Coffee at a queer-friendly café, then browse vintage and concept stores.
2. Homo Hill → Short climb; daytime is quiet but you'll see the layout. Note your favorite bars for evening (our [Itaewon district guide](/districts/itaewon) has the full list).
3. Namsan (optional) → Cable car or walk to N Seoul Tower for views. Best before sunset.
4. Back to Itaewon → Dinner and bars. End the night on Homo Hill or at a nearby club.
Rough time: 4–5 hours without Namsan; add 2 hours with Namsan.
Route 2: Jongno – Palaces & Gay Bars (Full-Day)
Best for: Culture plus a local, laid-back gay vibe.
1. Gyeongbokgung → Arrive at opening (9 AM) to avoid crowds. Rent hanbok nearby for free entry and photos.
2. Bukchon Hanok Village → 15-min walk. Alleys and tea houses; keep an eye on the map so you don't get lost.
3. Lunch in Insadong or Jongno → Traditional or fusion; then browse Insadong's craft and souvenir shops.
4. Jongno gay bars → Late afternoon or early evening. Smaller, more local than Itaewon. See our [Jongno district guide](/districts/jongno) for venues.
5. Cheonggyecheon Stream → Evening stroll. Lit up at night; good wind-down before heading back.
Rough time: 6–8 hours.
Route 3: Gangnam – Upscale & Saunas (Half-Day or Full-Day)
Best for: Shopping, premium saunas, and a different side of Seoul's gay scene.
1. Gangnam Station (Line 2) → Exit toward main strip. Coffee and people-watching.
2. COEX / Starfield → Mall and aquarium if you want indoor time.
3. Garosu-gil or Apgujeong → Boutiques and cafés; more relaxed than the main Gangnam drag.
4. Gangnam saunas & bars → Evening. Check our [Gangnam district guide](/districts/gangnam) for LGBTQ+-friendly saunas and bars.
5. Optional: Han River park (Banpo or Yeouido) for sunset and night view.
Rough time: 4–6 hours without Han River; add 2 hours with river and dinner.
Route 4: Quick Hits – One Day, Three Vibes (Full-Day)
Best for: Maximizing variety when you have only one full day to sightsee.
1. Morning – Jongno → Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung (one palace only) + short Bukchon walk.
2. Midday – Lunch in Insadong → Then subway to Itaewon.
3. Afternoon – Itaewon → Main strip + Homo Hill reconnaissance; café or early drink.
4. Evening – Itaewon or Jongno → Choose one area for dinner and bars based on mood (party vs. chill).
Rough time: 8–9 hours. Tiring but doable with comfy shoes and T-Money.
Tips for Any Route
- Maps: Use Naver Map or KakaoMap; Google Maps is less reliable in Korea.
- Comfort: Wear good walking shoes. Seoul is hilly and subway stairs are common.
- Safety: These areas are generally safe; keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots.
- Events: Check our blog and district pages for festivals, pride, and party events that might change the best order of visits.
